Learning RPM - RPM Overview

HALO recommends these steps for beginning to learn Soma® Rapid Prompting Method:

1. Understand the theory.
On this website, read the Methodology, Frequently Asked Questions and Case Study sections, and view the provided online video clips, including the 1:1 Session Clips and the clip of Tito on his page. Join as an online member, and participate in dialogue and questions on HALO's Member Forum for parents, professionals and students of Soma® RPM from all over the world. From HALO's online store, purchase and view Soma's conference DVD which explains different types of learners and how brain function affects learning for persons with autism. Read Tito's book The Mind Tree, in order to better understand persons with autism. Also, his soon to be released How Can I Talk if My Lips Don't Move? describes Tito's sensory experience with autism. NOTE: Soma's book: Soma® RPM: Understanding and Teaching Persons with Autism soon will be available for purchase from HALO's online store..
2. Observe Soma's instruction.
Many of Soma's 1:1 and/or group sessions with students are made viewable via a video feed for observers. We encourage adults to watch Soma's instruction in order to see how her RPM gets applied in different teaching situations. Parents and Professionals may contact HALO to inquire about observation opportunities of particular students, either at the HALO clinic in Austin, TX or at the workshops (please see Calendar) Soma conducts 2-3 times a year at other locations. For families who attend camps, HALO records and provides the session copy on DVD, to serve as a reference for how to approach teaching the student after returning home. After following the steps above for Understanding the Theory, we do advise new clients to schedule a camp or RPM session with Soma. To schedule an appointment, new clients must first join as a HALO online member, and then complete a New Client Intake.
3. Practice.
For most adults, Soma® RPM is not an easy method to learn. It takes practice, patience and persistence. It takes a daily discipline of using the method for academic teaching and for incorporating the concepts into the student's life system. Because students are most familiar with the primary care-giver, we generally recommend that that person be the one to begin RPM at home, by daily reading age-appropriate subjects to their student. The primary care giver can work with the child by offering written word choices as a mode to respond to questions and dialogue. After the student grows accustomed to choosing from written word choices, the adult begins to have the student spell selected word choices. Eventually, students learn to provide their responses by either spelling, handwriting and/or speaking, leading towards open-ended communication. We suggest that students become proficient responding to RPM with one person, in the home setting, before introducing its use with other adults and/or in a group setting or classroom. AFTER parents and professionals have done the previously mentioned steps of Understanding the Theory (by reading and viewing the various materials), Observing Instruction (by attending sessions, such as a camp, and/or studying the DVD copies), and Practicing it's use for at least 3-6 months, we invite adults to apply for Soma® RPM training. Before applying for training, we require adults to fulfill certain pre-requisites which are listed on the training application.
Please see our Methodology and Frequently Asked Questions pages for more specifics on the definition and use of RPM, and refer to the Resource page for downloadable RPM information.
